19th century peg legs were cheaper alternatives to other artificial legs and many people found peg legs more comfortable for walking.1
Attaching the peg leg usually involved strapping the leg to the thigh and sometimes the waist or shoulder to prevent the leg from slipping.2
Crutches were, of course, often used when wearing a peg leg.
