19th century peg legs were cheaper alternatives to other artificial legs and many people found peg legs more comfortable for walking.1

Attaching the peg leg usually involved strapping the leg to the thigh and sometimes the waist or shoulder to prevent the leg from slipping.2

Crutches were, of course, often used when wearing a peg leg.

A really good resource about making a peg leg in the 21st century, since most resources only show historical depictions.
